About the product
Congratulations on purchasing the FCS managed Halonex® Distribution Switch 12!
In front of you is a managed layer 2 switch providing 12 Easy Lock™ Polymer Optical Fiber (POF) ports and for connecting towards traditional infrastructure it offers 2 RJ45 ports and 2 SFP+ ports. Below you will find a quick overview of the highlights.
Ports
The switch has:
- 2 x RJ45 ports 1 Gbit/s uplink
- 2 x SFP+ ports 10 Gbit/s uplink
- 12 x Easy Lock™ POF 1 Gbit/s ports
- 1 x Console port
- 1 x USB-A
High speed backbone
Using either the RJ45 ports or the SFP+ ports the switch has an uplink up to 10 Gbit per second. The total capacity for processing network traffic will reach speeds up to 44 Gbit per second.
Easily installed
Using the Easy Lock™ ports connecting network devices was never easier. Connecting a custom size cable can be done in just 4 simple steps:
- Cut the POF cable to size
- Open the Easy Lock™ port
- Push the POF cable in
- Close the Easy Lock™ port
No more fiddling with RJ45 connectors!
Redundant network
Using POF your network can be connected in a ring, rather than the traditional star. Besides the obvious benefits of less cable, les installation time, less pollution and more flexibility your network also becomes redundant. Just connect all devices in a ring and the switch will automatically use RSTP making your network redundant.

Warnings & Precautions
Please read the following warnings and precautions carefully.
Do not stare into POF ports & POF cables
Refrain from looking directly into the POF ports or the ends of the POF cable. The used optics emit a red color so you can see the light in order to establish the correct way of installing the cables. The red light is LED based and not harmful. However staring into the light for a prolonged period can result in eye irritations or worse.
Use the proper tools for installation
When installing the devices make sure to use proper tools that are purpose made for the job at hand. Using the wrong tools may result in injury.
Never insert tools and materials that are conductive into the device
You may get an electrical shock when inserting tools and materials that are conductive into the device. Please refrain from using such tools and materials for these purposes.
Follow construction regulations
For your own personal safety always follow the construction warnings and regulations when installing the device.
Do not open the device
By opening the device all warrantee’s and guarantee’s will terminate.
Other
- Only use the device for its intended purpose.
- Only install the device following the instructions provided in this manual.
- Refrain from manipulating, altering, adjusting the device in any way other than as indicated in this manual. This includes but is not limited to heating the device, deforming it in any way, applying lubricants and using excessive force.
- Operate the device in its intended environment and within its environmental conditions.

Hardware installation
Need to know
The following items need to be taken into account when installing the Halonex® Distribution Switch 12. SFP+ ports When using the SFP+ ports make sure the module is an SFP+ (SFF-8431 4.1) module with an LC connector. The older SFP/cSFP (SFF INF-8074i) with an SC connector do not work properly.

Installation
Step 1
Attach the rack mounting brackets on the left and right side of the device using the provided brackets an Philips screws.
Step 2
Place the device into the rack. Make sure the device has proper clearance, at least 10 cm at the rear, and 1U space above and below of the device for proper heat dissipation & ventilation.
Step 3
Connect the provided AC power cable that came with the device to the rear of the device.
Step 4
Plugin the AC power cable to a power socket.
Verification
Step 1
The device will automatically turn ON when plugged into a powersocket.
Step 2
At the front of the device the System light (bottom LED) must turn Amber. From that moment on the device is fully booted and ready for operation.
Commissioning
To add the Halonex® Distribution Switch 12 to your network follow the initial steps below.
Initial setup
Step 1
Connect the Halonex® Distribution Switch 12 to your network by plugging in a RJ45 ethernet cable or SFP+ cable to the right front of the device.
Step 2
Verify that the LED indicator of the ports used in step 1 is on. A connection with your network is now established.
Step 3
Add further devices using the Easy Lock™ ports or RJ45/SFP+ ports.
POF cable connection
- Make sure the POF cable is cut at an perfect 90 degree angle using a POF cable cutter. Also remove any residue from the cable and port.
- Carefully split about 4 cm of the POF cable into 2 single cables. One TX one RX cable.
- Open the Easy Lock™ port by gently pulling the outer mantal of the Easy Lock™ port.
- Insert the cable into the respective TX/RX side of the Easy Lock™ port.
Note: Push the cable all the way to the back of the port until you cannot go any further (approximately 2 cm). This ensures that the optics are as close to the cable as possible.
Failure to do so will result in significant loss of throughput and maybe even no connection at all.
- Close the Easy Lock™ port by pushing the outer mantal of the Easy Lock™ port inwards. You must feel a click to know it is properly locked.
The switch will automatically create a link to each connected device.
Managing the device
Accessing the management web portal
To access the management web portal follow these steps.
Step 1
Find the IP address of the switch. By default the IP address of the switch is: 192.168.0.10.
However; if you have connected the switch to a network which has a DHCP server running, the switch will accept the IP address that is provided by that DHCP server. Please look in DHCP table for the given IP address or use an IP LAN scanner.
Step 2
Connect a computer to one of the RJ45 ports of the switch.
Step 3
Setup the network interface (NIC) in your computer to be in the same subnet and VLAN as the switch. The default VLANs of the switch are 1 untagged and 502 tagged.
Note: VLAN 502 is the management VLAN of the Halonex® and Optolux® products. It is used for managing and commissioning the products. Your network traffic should run within a different VLAN.
Step 4
Open a browser and browse to the IP address of the switch.
Step 5
Login using these credentials.
Username: admin
Password: admin
Step 6
For security reasons it is strongly recommended to change the password immediately after first login. Keep the password secure by sharing it only with authorized users.
Configuring the switch
Firmware version older than 26
If the switch is connected to FiberUnlimited hardware the RSTP configuration of the Halonex® Distribution Switch 12 needs to be set to RSTP short.
Troubleshooting
Experiencing problems during the setup of the device? Find the applicable symptom below for suggestions on how to fix it.

Tip: Double check if the network interface of the laptop or computer is set to an IP address in the same subnet as the switch. Tip: Double check if the laptop or computer is connected to the same VLAN as the switch. The default supported VLANs of the switch are 1 untagged and 502 tagged. |
My device can not communicate |
Check if the VLAN settings on the incoming port on the switch are the same as the outgoing port of your network device. Tip: check if your device received an IP address. |
