Improving your operation
Flexibility
The ring topology makes it easy to expand your network, even after installation. Simply cut the POF cable where you want to add a new node, connect the cable ends to the node, and a new access point is live. This approach not only simplifies upgrades but also improves overall network performance compared to traditional UTP systems.
Lower latency
Because data is transmitted optically, latency is inherently lower than with electrical UTP connections. Even with more than ten nodes in a ring, response times remain well below 1 ms at any point; ensuring consistently fast performance.
Improved uptime through redundancy
Each node is connected via two independent links to separate switches. This reduces single points of failure and ensures higher network availability, keeping operations running smoothly even in case of disruptions.
Immune to electromagnetic interference (EMI)
POF cables transmit data optically and are unaffected by electromagnetic radiation from sources such as microwaves, motors, or high-voltage power lines. This makes them highly reliable in challenging industrial or commercial environments.
Enhanced security
Optical POF connections cannot be tapped with antenna receivers, unlike copper-based UTP cables. The only way to intercept data is by physically cutting the cable — an event that is immediately detectable. This provides a higher level of network security.
PoE availability
Since POF cannot carry electrical power, PoE (802.3af, 802.3at) is injected directly at each node. This ensures devices still receive the power they need, while also improving energy efficiency compared to long UTP runs with thin copper conductors.
Bandwidth scalability
A standard ring delivers 2 Gbps, typically shared by 5–10 nodes. Depending on your requirements, the number of nodes per ring can be adjusted; fewer nodes for high-bandwidth applications, more for setups with lighter traffic.
Extended distances
Where UTP or POF point-to-point cabling is limited to 50–90 meters, the ring topology allows each node to regenerate the signal for the next segment of up to 50 meters. This makes it easy to cover 250 meters or more while naturally distributing the required nodes along the way.
